Four drag queens performed at a sold‑out country pub in Emerald, Queensland – a town of about 15,000 people located roughly 300 km from Rockhampton. The audience filled the venue weeks before the night of the show.

"The fact that it sold out, like, weeks prior and then … we were over capacity on the night absolutely blew my mind," performer Leisha Luck said. "It revived my sense of purpose … I felt reinvigorated in what I do."

Emerald’s theatre director Bailey Simpson called the performance "the best thing in the world," noting that seeing drag in an outback community shows people they are supported wherever they live.

Central Queensland has a colourful drag history. In 2005 Luke Shaw’s show Venus Rising packed the old Post Office Hotel in Rockhampton, and the event later merged into the ongoing ClubRok nights that continue to draw crowds today.

A 2020 La Trobe University study found 57 % of LGBTQIA+ people experienced high psychological distress and almost 75 % had suicidal thoughts, with Queensland performing worse than other states.

Headspace senior clinical adviser David Myles says positive representation of queer culture helps young people feel connected to their identity and safe in regional areas, countering the sense of isolation many experience.

Leisha Luck added that the Emerald show aims to prove there are safe spaces for queer youth in country towns, hoping local young people will see that they belong and don’t need to leave.
