Fans Co‑Author the Toronto Tempo’s First Season, Turning a Struggling Start into a Community Story

The Toronto Tempo completed its inaugural season as Canada’s first WNBA expansion team. The franchise began just 50 days after a new collective‑bargaining agreement, giving general manager Monica Wright‑Rogers and head coach Sandy Brondello little time to build a roster. The team finished 13th out of 15, with an 11‑33 record, and dealt with injuries and disruptions from the FIBA Women’s World Cup.

From the first home game, supporters showed up in large numbers wearing the team’s bordeaux and borealis blue colours. The Montreal debut was especially notable – it broke a league‑wide attendance record, proving that fans were eager to back the new club even before it had a long history.

Chief marketing officer Whitney Bell explained that the Tempo sees its fans as co‑authors of the story, not just an audience. “It’s about making them part of the story, not just telling the story to them,” Bell said, highlighting campaigns that let supporters share their own experiences.

Beyond cheering in the arena, the organization launched community initiatives such as Tempo Impact and Together We Win. These programs focus on health education, advocacy for women and girls, mentorship, and coaching opportunities across Canada.

The strong fan involvement shows how a sports franchise can build a sense of community even when on‑court results are modest. By turning supporters into active participants, the Tempo has created a nationwide movement that extends far beyond wins and losses.
