Alan Kohler announced he will retire at the end of the year, ending a 31‑year career with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that has made him a household name in business journalism.
He first joined the ABC in 1995 as the business and economics correspondent for the 7.30 Report, later moving to host Inside Business and, for the past 24 years, anchoring the 7 pm News finance segment with his distinctive style.
Before his television success, Kohler built a formidable print résumé, serving as editor of The Australian Financial Review and The Age, and he now writes a weekly column while hosting the podcast “That’s Business” each Friday.
Kohler told ABC staff, “I am ready to spend more time with my family,” signalling that personal priorities have begun to outweigh the demands of a nightly broadcast schedule.
His departure matters because his clear, often witty explanations of complex financial issues have helped generations of Australians make sense of the economy, and his influence will be felt long after he steps down.
