The Reserve Bank of Australia has lifted its cash rate to 4.6%, the highest level in almost 15 years, and everyday Australians are already seeing the impact on their wallets.
The increase is a quarter‑point jump announced in the latest RBA meeting, taking the official cash rate to 4.6 per cent – a level not reached since the early 2010s.
For a typical homeowner with a $750,000 mortgage, the rise adds about $114 to each monthly payment. Since the RBA began raising rates in February, the extra cost totals $454 for that loan.
Financial Counselling Australia warned that the hike will deepen stress for families already struggling. Interim chief executive Jane Pires said, “Mortgage stress is already the number one concern for people reaching out to the National Debt Helpline.”
Data from the National Debt Helpline show mortgage stress was the top reason callers sought help in the June quarter, with 187,905 contacts – an 11.76 % rise compared with the same period a year earlier.
RBA Governor Michele Bullock acknowledged the difficulty, stating the measure was “tough but necessary” and that “we know this is going to hit people pretty hard.”
