On 30 September, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Ethnic and Religious Affairs and the Ho Chi Minh City Computer Association hosted a workshop on digital transformation for cultural identity, attracting more than 200 participants.
Lam Dinh Thang, director of the Department of Ethnic and Religious Affairs, explained that Politburo Resolution No. 57‑NQ/TW marks science, technology, innovation and digital transformation as a key strategic breakthrough for Vietnam.
He added that the city’s priority is to modernise governance, use data effectively and raise the quality of services for residents, businesses and institutions.
Ho Chi Minh City is home to 13 religions, over 3,000 places of worship and more than 2.8 million followers, a diversity that enriches the city’s identity but also creates governance challenges such as keeping data current and protecting traditional values.
The workshop participants explored how technology can go beyond administration – for example, by supporting the Halal food value chain through traceability, transparent information and stronger branding, which can boost local economies.
At the closing of the event, the two agencies signed a memorandum of understanding. The agreement commits them to mobilise technology resources, expand digital skills, create “digital destinations” and improve state management in ethnic, belief and religious affairs.
According to the department, building data resources that serve both governance and development, and putting people at the centre of technology adoption, ensures that innovation works hand‑in‑hand with preserving cultural, belief and religious values.
