The Quiet Pilgrimage of 49,000 Hand‑Copied Ksitigarbha Sutras at Dia Tang Phi Lai

On the ninth day of the first lunar month in 2020—February 2, 2020—exactly 49,000 hand‑written copies of the Ksitigarbha Sutra were ceremonially enshrined within the Ksitigarbha tower of Dia Tang Phi Lai Pagoda, creating a tangible archive of devotion.

Across the breadth of Vietnam, laypeople and monastics alike devote countless hours to reproducing the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Purvapranidhana Sutra, then dispatch their manuscripts to the pagoda, where each sheet becomes part of a larger, invisible congregation.

Venerable Thich Minh Quang, the abbot of Dia Tang Phi Lai, articulates that the act of copying compels practitioners to read with deliberation, internalise the Buddha’s precepts, and endeavour to embody them in daily conduct, warning against reducing the practice to a mere transactional merit‑accumulation.

In this tradition, paper, ink and the writer’s time constitute an offering that mirrors the virtues of patience, gratitude and an earnest aspiration toward moral goodness, transforming a simple act of transcription into a profound spiritual gesture.

Dia Tang Phi Lai Pagoda, formerly known as Dung Pagoda, is situated in the former Ha Nam province roughly 70 km from Hanoi; its foundations date back to the 11th century, anchoring contemporary practice in a millennial heritage.

The amassed sutras therefore represent more than scripture; they embody hours of solitary contemplation, a network of strangers bound by a shared ethical intent, and a reminder that even in a hyper‑fastened world, the deliberate pause of pen on paper remains a potent path to mindfulness.
