Severe flooding in Bangkok made the roads impossible to use. Because of the flood, airline employees could not travel to Suvarnabhumi Airport, creating a big staff shortage, according to The Nation Thailand.
The shortage meant that around 1,000 transit passengers were stranded at Thailand's second‑largest airport while many flights were cancelled.
With fewer staff, more than 5,000 bags piled up and the airline could not handle cargo. Airports of Thailand offered extra workers to help clear the luggage, while Thai Airways stayed in charge of sorting the bags.
Thai Airways decided to cut its daily flights by 30% so it could reset its schedule and improve punctuality.
During the chaos, Suvarnabhumi Airport and the Tourism Authority of Thailand gave passengers food and drinking water in the transit area, and they worked on arranging alternative flights.
Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul said the disruptions hurt Thailand's tourism image and lowered confidence in the sector.
