Australian actor‑writer Eddie Perfect is developing an AI‑satire version of Molière’s 17th‑century play Tartuffe for Malthouse Theatre’s 2027 season.
At home, Perfect has a strict rule: no one in his family talks to AI machines. He believes they outsource thinking and can be harmful to young people, and he suggests that people should only access AI after they turn 25.
In Perfect’s adaptation, the deceitful Tartuffe becomes a hair‑dressing AI robot. Perfect will play the gullible host Orgon, while award‑winning comedian Noah Szto takes on the role of the robot.
The production is one of eight new, all‑Australian plays in the 2027 season. Artistic director Dean Bryant says the season is designed to give audiences “new experiences” and to warn about the impact of technology.
By re‑imagining a centuries‑old satire with a futuristic robot, the show highlights today’s AI anxieties while keeping the comedy alive, showing how classic stories can still speak to modern concerns.
