Danny Haberer is a 54‑year‑old Dutch former software executive. He arrived in Vietnam in July 2024. After his company went bankrupt, he moved to Go Cong in mid‑2026 to start a new life.
He lives in a garden that has mango, banana, pomelo and jackfruit trees, a fishpond and 24 chickens. When he first arrived the garden was messy, with banana trunks and weeds, but he cleaned it up and tended it himself.
He asked for help on Facebook. His neighbour Ngan, who lives about 500 metres away, helped him register for waste collection and fed the fish and chickens when he was away.
Danny livestreams his garden work. He often says Vietnamese phrases such as “ba con coi ne” and “tui dang tren duong ve nha”. His videos have made him a familiar face in the local community.
He says the slower pace, friendly neighbours and lower cost of living give him hope, peace and a higher quality of life. He feels more relaxed than in the fast‑moving city life he left.
Danny plans to grow his garden further. He wants to add an outdoor kitchen and install solar panels so the garden can become a place to share farm life with others.
