Thailand’s hotel and accommodation market is experiencing a wave of closures and far fewer new businesses. Understanding the reasons helps explain how tourism‑related jobs and travel options are being affected.
The national hotel occupancy rate rose by only 0.18% year‑on‑year in the first nine months of 2026, according to Bangkok‑based Kasikorn Research Center (KResearch). At the same time, new hotel and accommodation business registrations dropped to 779, a 31.2% decline from the previous year.
Industry insiders said the sector is under growing pressure from weak tourism demand, intensifying competition and high operating costs, The Nation Thailand reported. These factors make it harder for hotels to stay profitable and to open new locations.
KResearch forecasts around 31.4 million foreign visitors in 2026, down 4% from 2025 and about 79% of the 2019 pre‑pandemic level. The research firm attributed the sluggish recovery to competition from other destinations, economic weakness in source markets, safety concerns and geopolitical tensions.
The Chinese embassy in Thailand issued an urgent safety advisory for its citizens, warning of forced labor, human trafficking and bogus job offers. This adds to the safety concerns that are already hurting tourism.
Overall, the surge in hotel closures and the slowdown in new registrations are driven by weak tourism demand, tougher competition, high operating costs, and growing safety and geopolitical worries. These challenges together explain why Thailand’s hospitality sector is struggling to recover.
