Van Anh, a 44‑year‑old mother in Hanoi, learned she was pregnant in mid‑2025 while her family was preparing for her son Duy’s wedding. The news stunned everyone, even the nine‑year‑old brother who mistakenly shouted that his mother had Covid.

Because of the pregnancy, Duy and his fiancée postponed their wedding until after the baby was born. When Duy tried to visit his future in‑laws, his heavily pregnant mother felt uncomfortable and stayed home, so he went alone.

In April, the family welcomed a baby girl named Minh Anh, affectionately called “Little Treasure.” Her paternal grandfather, who had promised a special gift for a daughter, kept his word and gave the family VND 100 million (about US$4,000).

The pregnancy was physically hard for Van Anh. She developed dengue fever and suffered complications from uterine fibroids, which required a long course of antibiotics and extended recovery.

During Van Anh’s treatment, her three sons took over most household chores and newborn care. Duy cooked, prepared formula and rocked the baby, his middle brother cleaned the house, and the youngest helped set the table. Duy’s girlfriend also helped with laundry and babysitting on weekends.

The arrival of the baby changed everyday life at home. Pink clothes, ribbons and baby accessories now fill the rooms, and the family often gathers in the parents’ bedroom after dinner to play with the infant. Duy now spends part of his salary on diapers, formula and tiny dresses.

Although Duy had been saving for his own wedding, the experience of caring for his sister has given him confidence for married life. The family’s plans show how a late‑stage pregnancy can reshape roles, delay traditional events and bring new joy to a Vietnamese household.
