Thuy Vi, 32, from Ho Chi Minh City, and Amirul Hamzad Amirrashid, 34, from Kuala Lumpur, first crossed paths in Australia. Vi was employed at a fruit‑packing workshop, while Amirul managed the same site. After three months of daily rides and meals together, they chose to date.
Vi’s mother soon expressed worry about the couple’s cultural and religious differences, fearing that Islam and Vietnamese traditions might clash. In contrast, Amirul’s mother, who had lived in Australia for years, called Vi’s parents, asked for their blessing, and promised that Vi’s life would not have to change after marriage.
The couple’s engagement ceremony took place in Australia in 2025, attended by about thirty guests. The event marked the start of their shared journey and showed both families that respect could outweigh uncertainty.
In July 2026 they celebrated their wedding in Vietnam, blending Vietnamese and Malaysian customs. The ceremony began with the bride and groom wearing traditional Malaysian ceremonial outfits, then they changed into a suit and an ao dài for the main stage, and finally into the ao dài again to thank the guests.
A special banquet was arranged for the groom’s Malaysian relatives. Six tables served a menu that followed Islamic dietary rules, featuring chicken and seafood dishes. The thoughtful catering was praised by the guests and highlighted the families’ willingness to accommodate each other’s traditions.
Their story illustrates how mutual respect, open communication, and active family involvement can help intercultural couples navigate cultural and religious differences, turning potential barriers into shared strengths.
