The pressure is not just a feeling. Google data shows that searches for “What is peer pressure and how to deal with it?” are climbing in Vietnam, signalling a growing public concern about the phenomenon.
Anh, a communications specialist in Ho Chi Minh City, earns VND22 million a month. To match the success she sees online, she added three freelance projects, cancelled coffee dates and survived on instant noodles. After a fainting spell, she dropped two projects, switched off her phone at night and started reading books to recover.
Quoc Huy, a 28‑year‑old graphic designer, had saved VND400 million after six years of work. Influenced by classmates bragging about land and apartment flips, he invested all his savings, borrowed VND200 million, and signed a 20‑year VND1.3 billion mortgage. He now spends VND16 million of his VND25 million monthly salary on loan repayments.
Vuong Nguyen Toan Thien, medical director of the Lumos Psychological Counseling and Therapy Center, says constant exposure to peers’ success triggers a social‑comparison mechanism. The brain then treats not owning a house as failure, which raises cortisol, causes insomnia and other health problems.
Psychologists recommend two practical steps: first, build an emergency reserve fund equal to three to six months of basic living expenses before making large investments; second, limit exposure to triggering social‑media accounts by unfollowing or hiding them.
When social comparison turns into peer pressure, young professionals may chase risky financial moves and burn out. Protecting mental health and finances starts with a realistic budget, a safety net, and a curated online feed.
