Alyson Doiron, a 16‑year‑old from Cap‑Sante, Quebec, entered the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin with her five‑year‑old Holstein, Ella (Arolene Dempsey Ella). Ella won the International Junior Holstein Show and was later named Supreme Junior Show Champion.
Winning at the Expo can raise a cow’s market price by tens of thousands of dollars and also increase the value of its future offspring, making the prize potentially life‑changing for the farmer who owns the animal.
The competition took place while the United States and Canada are locked in a trade dispute under President Donald Trump. Brian Carscadden, senior manager of Blondin Sires, said the trade war does not come up often in conversations at the Expo.
Carscadden drove about 1,500 km from St. Placide, Quebec, bringing 25 cows in trailers to the event, underscoring how important the show is for Canadian dairy producers.
American farmers at the Expo, such as Indiana single‑mom Paula Lawver and New York farmer Seth Muck, said the trade dispute is influencing how they plan to vote in the upcoming U.S. midterm elections.
Ella’s victory gives Canada a boost of national pride and shows how a single agricultural success can improve farm economics, even as broader trade tensions between the two neighbours continue to shape political attitudes.
