The convergence of demographic pressure, evolving personal aspirations, and a labour market hungry for seasoned expertise has sparked a pronounced surge in encore careers among Vietnam’s middle‑aged cohort, a trend that challenges conventional notions of retirement.
Nguyen Anh Van retired from the military in 2021 at age 47, earned a law degree in 2014 and was admitted to the bar in late 2025, now practicing law in Dong Nai.
Phuong Mai, a 50‑year‑old banking professional, earned degrees in traditional medicine and pharmacology, and opened a nutrition and wellness advisory center in late 2025.
A joint survey by the University of Labour and Social Affairs and the National Economics University found that the search for purpose and the desire to give back are the top motivations for workers aged 40+ to stay employed after retirement.
Data from the General Statistics Office show Vietnam had 14.2 million people aged 60 or older in 2024, projected to reach about 18 million by 2030, underscoring the urgency of retaining experienced talent beyond conventional retirement thresholds.
Tran Bang Viet, CEO of Dong A Solutions, says veteran professionals’ tacit knowledge is valuable in an AI‑driven era and outlines five core assets needed for a successful encore career.
He delineates those assets as domain expertise, reputation, professional networks, technological literacy, and financial resilience, arguing that the cumulative effect of these elements equips older workers to navigate complex, high‑stakes environments where algorithmic solutions fall short.
From the perspective of small and medium‑sized enterprises, the appeal is pragmatic: they can tap into deep, industry‑specific insight without the overhead of full‑time senior hires, paying premium rates for advisory engagements that leverage the veteran’s nuanced judgment.
Ultimately, the intertwining of personal fulfillment and corporate necessity suggests that encore careers will become an integral pillar of Vietnam’s future labour architecture, offering a template for other rapidly aging economies to emulate.
