Why Tracey Moffatt’s Complete Archive Changes Australian Art and Scholarship

Lưu trữ 40 năm của Tracey Moffatt về với Chau Chak Wing Museum

When she was five, Moffatt entered a children’s art competition with a painting that wasn’t hers. "I stole the painting from a boy who was a better artist than I was," the award‑winning artist tells ABC Radio National's Awaye!. She later called the request to donate the work a "letter of shame".

Because she felt she could not paint or draw, Moffatt turned to photography and filmmaking. This shift produced some of her most celebrated pieces, including the film Night Cries (1989) and the photo series Something More (1989).

In 2025, exactly sixty years after the childhood incident, an anonymous donor gave the Chau Chak Wing Museum in Sydney Moffatt’s complete archive dating from 1985. The donation is the first of its kind in Australia and contains every photograph, film and video she has created, together with test prints, ephemera and even "failed" works.

"I'm so honoured by the idea of my archive being held by Chau Chak Wing Museum for safekeeping and eventual display. An artist couldn't want for anything better," Moffatt says. The collection is stored in a dedicated Tracey Moffatt Archive room, neatly organized for researchers and the public.

Having every piece – from finished masterpieces to discarded experiments – in one place gives scholars unprecedented material to study how Moffatt’s ideas evolved. It also lets students trace the technical and narrative choices behind her iconic images, deepening academic understanding of contemporary Indigenous art.

Moffatt has asked the museum not to mount a large solo exhibition. Instead, she wants her work to be woven into thematic shows, encouraging curators to place her series alongside other artists and ideas. This approach aims to keep her archive dynamic and relevant.

The donation therefore does more than preserve objects; it reshapes how Australian institutions present contemporary art, provides fresh research opportunities, and ensures that Moffatt’s creative journey can inspire future generations.
