Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced a civil investigation into Fruit of the Loom and Hanes, focusing on the safety of children’s underwear. He says the probe aims to protect kids from hidden toxins.
Paxton sent investigative demands to Fruit of the Loom, which belongs to Berkshire Hathaway, and to Hanes, owned by Canadian firm Gildan Activewear. Neither company has been accused of wrongdoing yet.
Gildan responded that it will fully cooperate with the inquiry and that it follows strict manufacturing and sourcing standards designed to meet industry guidelines on harmful chemicals.
The attorney general highlighted several substances that can appear in synthetic fabrics: bisphenols, fluorine, parabens, phthalates and PFAS – the so‑called “forever chemicals.” Research links these compounds to cancer, hormone disruption, infertility and other health problems.
Paxton also warned that synthetic materials such as polyester, rayon and spandex can release micro‑plastics during wear and wash, adding another layer of risk for children who cannot protect themselves.
