The Television Academy and Amazon have signed a six‑year agreement that will see the ceremony move to Prime Video beginning with the September 2027 awards. The deal ends the long‑standing “Wheel Deal,” which rotated the show among ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC each year.
Academy chairman Cris Abrego said a single, multi‑year partner provides continuity, allowing the Academy and Amazon to learn from each other and improve the show year after year.
The Academy also secured a key condition: the broadcast will stay free, and viewers will not need a Prime subscription to watch the live ceremony.
Emmy viewership has dropped dramatically, from a peak of more than 20 million viewers to roughly seven million today. Amazon hopes the streaming home will boost numbers and attract younger audiences.
Prime Video head Mike Hopkins explained that the partnership can increase viewership over time, “age it down,” and give Amazon the chance to promote nominees to its customers throughout the year.
The move reflects broader industry pressure as live events shift to digital platforms, and it could reshape how awards shows reach audiences in an increasingly fragmented media landscape.
