Bangkok was voted the world’s best city for tourists in the Readers' Choice Awards, a poll that involved more than 800,000 readers worldwide. The award recognises destinations that attract and satisfy visitors.
Last year, Valletta, Malta’s capital, claimed the No. 1 spot and Bangkok did not appear in the top‑20 list. This dramatic rise shows how quickly a city’s reputation can change for travelers.
The Thai capital offers bustling markets, glittering palaces, street‑food stalls, Michelin‑starred restaurants, stylish rooftop bars and world‑class entertainment venues – all factors that draw tourists back again and again.
However, the city was declared a disaster‑affected zone late last month after nearly 300 mm (12 inches) of rain fell in three days, roughly the amount Bangkok usually receives during the whole month of September.
The flooding disrupted travel at Suvarnabhumi, the city’s main airport, causing severe delays and a large number of flight cancellations, directly affecting inbound and outbound passengers.
More heavy rains are expected in the coming days, so travelers should keep an eye on weather updates and consider flexible booking options to avoid further inconvenience.
