On Thursday the Swedish Academy awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature to Anne Carson, a 76‑year‑old Canadian poet and essayist. The Academy said her work stands out for its daring blend of ancient tradition and modern invention.
Carson lives between Reykjavik, Iceland, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, and holds both Icelandic and Canadian citizenship.
The Academy praised her "bold and inventive oeuvre ... creating new forms for contemporary literature," noting how she engages the classical tradition in playful dialogue while forging entirely new literary shapes.
Carson’s reputation rests on her ability to reshape Greek and Latin stories into poems, essays, and even operatic pieces, a practice that few Nobel laureates have pursued so extensively.
Her list of honors already includes the 2002 T.S. Eliot Prize, where she became the first woman to win Britain’s top poetry award for The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos, among many other major prizes.
By turning ancient narratives into contemporary art, Carson shows how re‑interpreting the past can expand the possibilities of today’s literature, inspiring writers and readers worldwide.
