Lucy Cooper, a crochet artist from Hobart, first shared handmade items on Instagram as a teenager. After years of practice, she designed a spiral beanie inspired by 90s surfwear and began selling the pattern on Etsy.
A few months later Cooper discovered another Etsy store offering an AI‑generated version of her beanie pattern, complete with AI‑created images. The shop listed 67 different products and had already recorded 720 sales.
An AI‑detection service examined two of the shop’s listings and flagged them as 97% fake, confirming that the designs were not human‑made. Buyers who purchased the AI pattern reported that it did not produce a usable beanie.
Etsy’s vice‑president of customer operations, James Ossman, said sellers may use AI as a tool, but not to deceive buyers, misrepresent items, or copy the work of others. He added that enforcing these standards across a marketplace as large as Etsy is complex.
Cooper’s experience is not isolated. Artists worldwide have reported similar AI‑generated copies on Etsy, saying the technology makes it easy to replicate original work with a single click, undermining the value of handmade creations.
Melbourne‑based law professor Jeannie Paterson explained that copyright law around AI‑generated outputs is still very unclear. She said artists need clearer guidance on what rights they have and how they can enforce them in the AI age.
The surge of AI‑driven products challenges Etsy’s promise of a human‑centric marketplace, threatens creators’ livelihoods, and highlights the urgent need for clearer copyright rules that can keep pace with emerging technology.
