On 9 October, Bill Winters, chief executive of Standard Chartered, called for stronger regulation of artificial intelligence and for greater international cooperation, arguing that few industries need oversight more urgently.
He noted that the bank has already automated almost 25 percent of the roles it once held, yet its total employee count has continued to rise, showing that automation does not automatically shrink the workforce.
According to Winters, about 85 percent of staff whose positions were displaced by automation have been reskilled for other jobs, and the bank intends to keep investing in reskilling as AI use expands, because the skills required in an AI‑driven workplace will be significantly different.
He also stressed that occupations demanding human judgment – for example wealth‑management relationship managers who interact directly with clients – will remain essential, since customers still trust people more than machines.
For workers and job seekers, these points underline two practical implications: first, regulatory frameworks may shape the speed and safety of AI adoption; second, continuous learning will become a core part of career security in the banking sector.
