Anne Carson’s Late Canadian Praise Shows How National Taste Can Trail Global Fame
Anne Carson đoạt giải Nobel: Canada buộc phải bắt kịp

On Thursday, the 76‑year‑old Canadian writer Anne Carson was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature, joining a very short list of Canadian laureates.
Carson’s books do not fit neatly into any single category. She mixes prose, poetry and essays, and often stages imagined conversations between ancient Greek or Roman figures and modern celebrities.
Even before the Nobel, the international literary community recognised her talent. She won the 1984 Betty Colladay Award, the 1996 Lannan Literary Award for Poetry, a 1998 Guggenheim Fellowship and a 2000 MacArthur Fellowship.
In Canada, however, her early career was marked by a lack of official acknowledgement. Lucille Friesen‑King Edwards said, "Early in her career, a lot of people didn't get it or want to get it".
Later, Canadian institutions began to notice. Carson has received the Griffin Poetry Prize several times and the Quebec Writers' Federation's A.M. Klein Prize for Poetry.
Her story matters because it shows how a nation’s literary gatekeepers can lag behind the global consensus. When the world crowns a writer with the Nobel, it can push a country to re‑examine its own standards.
Carson is only the third Canadian ever to win the Nobel Prize in literature, a milestone that may encourage Canada to broaden its definition of literary excellence.
