In early September 2026, the cultural house of O Dien Commune in Hanoi’s countryside was filled to capacity. Friends and relatives who had travelled from Ireland, Australia, Switzerland, Brazil and other countries squeezed into the narrow space, searching for any free seat.
Five translators hurried between tables, handing out extra chairs, ice and drinks, and even showing foreign guests how to hold chopsticks.
Thao, a preschool teacher, had designed her invitations eight months earlier and expected only 35‑38 overseas guests. Word spread quickly, and the final count rose to 65, forcing her family to set up two additional tables at the last minute.
The groom, Irish civil engineer Eoin Aylward, met Thao in Australia four years ago. They became engaged in 2025, when Eoin gave her a traditional Irish Claddagh ring that symbolizes love and loyalty.
The ceremony kept all the classic Vietnamese rites – the bridal procession, ancestral altar, and ao dài dresses – while also accommodating the international crowd. Translators explained each ritual, and the banquet included both boiled chicken with lime leaves and a surprise order of KFC fried chicken for guests who might prefer familiar flavors.
Despite the logistical scramble, the atmosphere turned joyful. Villagers filmed the colorful procession of foreign groomsmen in ao dài, and many Irish guests were moved to tears by the warmth of the Vietnamese community.
The event shows how a cross‑continental romance can blend traditions, create unexpected challenges, and ultimately bring people together across language and distance.
