The Haze Task Force, led by the National Environment Agency, announced on 9 October that N95 respirators will be handed out to vulnerable Singaporeans as soon as the 24‑hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) climbs above 200, the threshold for a “very unhealthy” reading.

The eligible groups listed by the task force include members of the Pioneer Generation and Merdeka Generation, CHAS orange and blue cardholders, Medical Fee Exemption Card holders, ComCare assistance recipients, pregnant women, children aged 7‑16, and anyone with asthma.

These masks can be collected from vending machines placed at selected transport hubs, social‑service offices and People’s Association venues. Collectors must show their NRIC, or a family member or friend may pick up the masks on their behalf using the same ID, and each dispense contains two masks.

In addition to masks, the task force will convert air‑conditioned rooms in community clubs and designated residents’ committee and network centres into haze shelters once the PSI exceeds 200, giving residents a clean, indoor space to stay until conditions improve.

The task force also reminded the public that N95 masks are generally not needed for brief outdoor trips such as commuting to work or school, and that staying indoors or in the designated shelters is the safest short‑term option.

By providing both protective equipment and climate‑controlled shelters, Singapore’s response plan aims to reduce health risks for the most vulnerable groups during severe haze episodes, ensuring that everyone has a practical way to stay safe.
