Harry Connick Jr., a Grammy‑ and Emmy‑winning singer, composer and actor, has finally realized a promise he made to his mother more than five decades ago.
His mother, Anita‑Francis Livingston Connick—known as Babe—died when Harry was 13. She had always wished that he would one day perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall.
When she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, the teenage piano prodigy called Carnegie Hall to ask if he could someday play there, a request he later recalled saying, “I called Carnegie Hall to see if I could play there,” Connick Jr told ABC News.
On May 22‑23 2026, Connick Jr. stepped onto the Carnegie Hall stage for the first time. Those dates would have marked his mother’s 100th birthday, making the concert a deeply personal tribute.
“It was probably the most unusual performance I’ve ever done only because it’s a place I’ve wanted to play for almost 50 years,” Connick Jr said, recalling the long wait that began when he was a child.
The live show has been released as an album that listeners can stream online, or buy on CD and vinyl, extending the memory of that night beyond the concert hall.
To accompany the music, Connick Jr. wrote a book titled Babe: Elaboratio – A Tribute to My Mother. He stresses that the work is a personal memory, not a biography, and that it reflects only his own perspective.
Babe, his mother, was also a trailblazer in the legal world; she was one of the first female judges in New Orleans, a fact Connick Jr. mentions when describing her determination.
Harry Connick Jr.’s story shows how a parent’s wish and the pain of loss can inspire an artist to achieve a lifelong dream and create lasting tributes for future generations.
