When Josh Wells, a college student from Iowa, began searching for a place to stay in Montreal, he noticed that many Airbnb listings used unusually flawless profile pictures and polished interior photos.
Wells said the images looked too perfect, and a closer look at a piece of wall art revealed warped text that changed between photos. Convinced the pictures were AI‑generated, he decided not to book the Montreal rental.
An Ottawa family booked a Toronto Airbnb, only to find the room looked very different from the listing photos. Airbnb confirmed the mismatch and refunded the guests.
Francis Syms of Humber Polytechnic explained that free AI tools let anyone upload a picture and receive an edited version in as little as ten seconds, making it easy to create deceptive images.
Daniel Guttentag, an associate professor of hospitality, warned that mis‑represented photos erode guest trust and could eventually cause travelers to stop using the platform altogether.
Airbnb’s policy states listings must be accurately represented and encourages guests to report misleading photos. Meanwhile, California’s AI Transparency Act requires AI‑generated content to be clearly labeled.
Travelers can look for signs such as crooked door frames, inconsistent shadows, blurry text on wall art, or oddly shaped furniture. Using tools like Google Lens to reverse‑search images can also reveal whether a photo has been reused elsewhere.
By learning the tell‑tale signs of AI‑edited images and using Airbnb’s reporting tools, travelers can protect themselves and keep trust in short‑term rentals.
