Helen Porter Mitchell was born in 1861 in Richmond, a suburb of Melbourne. She was the eldest of ten surviving children. Music was part of her family life, and by the age of eight she was already performing in front of large crowds.
In 1882 she married Charles Nesbitt Frederick Armstrong, the son of an Irish baronet. The marriage quickly turned violent; Melba suffered domestic abuse. The couple eventually divorced, and Armstrong took their son to Texas, where he remained for twelve years.
Determined to pursue a singing career, Melba travelled to Paris and became a pupil of the renowned teacher Mathilde Marchesi. Under Marchesi’s guidance she adopted the stage name ‘Melba’, a nod to Melbourne, and made her operatic debut in Brussels in 1887. The performance opened the door to engagements across Europe.
Melba’s voice soon captivated audiences from London to New York, and by the early 1900s she was celebrated as one of the world’s leading sopranos. Her fame was such that she was later featured on the Australian $100 banknote, cementing her status as a national icon.
She continued to perform into her sixties, but in 1931 a facial operation—likely an early form of facelift—led to a severe infection. Melba died in Sydney of septicaemia, a tragic end to a remarkable career.
Melba’s journey from a colonial household marked by loss and abuse to the pinnacle of international opera illustrates how talent, perseverance, and supportive mentorship can break through personal and societal barriers. Her story remains a powerful example of resilience for anyone facing adversity.
