Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim presented an expansionary budget of RM459.8 billion (US$112.48 billion) for 2027. The plan raises the minimum wage to RM2,000 a month from RM1,700 starting in June, and lifts the individual income‑tax relief ceiling to RM12,000 a year, up from RM9,000 – the first change since 2010.
Anwar also announced an extra RM16 billion in cash assistance for lower‑income Malaysians, alongside measures to help first‑time home buyers and small businesses. He said the reforms aim to let economic growth reach ordinary people.
The budget documents project Malaysia’s economy to expand by 4.2%‑5.2% in 2027. While the growth forecast does not guarantee higher wages, the higher minimum pay and larger tax relief mean workers will keep more of their earnings, and the cash aid will provide immediate support to vulnerable households.
For families, the combined effect could mean a modest rise in disposable income, more room for savings and a better ability to meet daily expenses. Small businesses may also benefit from a larger consumer base with extra spending power.
