South Australia’s 2027 renewable goal may slip – why the delay still counts

Energy Minister Tom Koutsantonis said on a wind‑farm launch that South Australia might not hit its 100 % net‑renewable electricity target in 2027, though he remains confident the goal will be reached soon.
The 100 % net‑renewables target was originally set for 2030 by the previous Liberal government. In February 2024 the Labor government led by Premier Peter Malinauskas accelerated the deadline to 2027 as part of its State Prosperity Project.
Federal data show that in the 2025 calendar year renewables – mainly solar and wind – supplied 77.1 % of South Australia’s net electricity generation, while gas provided most of the remaining share.
Government figures also reveal that the value of large‑scale renewable energy and storage projects under construction or approved has risen to almost $32.5 billion, up from $19 billion a year earlier.
Dr Lin Han, a Lecturer in Business Analytics at Flinders University, argued that missing the 2027 deadline is not a major issue. “I think the long‑term progress matters more than the exact year,” she said, adding that even a net‑100 % mix is not completely emission‑free. She noted that reaching the goal in 2028 would still be a huge achievement compared with 2007, when renewables were only 1 % of the state’s electricity.
The delay matters mainly for political ambition and public perception. A later date does not stop the transition, but it does highlight the need for additional storage, transmission links and backup capacity to keep the grid reliable and affordable.
