The rise of artificial‑intelligence answers in search engines is changing how people read the news. When users get the information directly from the search page, publishers lose the clicks that once brought them revenue, so the issue matters to anyone who reads online news.
The SPUR coalition now has more than 80 members across over 20 countries. New members include The Atlantic and Brazil's National Association of Newspapers.
Publishers are turning to the courts to protect their work. Earlier this month USA Today and its owned newspapers sued OpenAI, alleging copyright infringement for using their articles without permission. Other news organisations have also filed similar claims against AI firms.
Google organic‑search referrals to more than 2,500 websites fell 33% globally between November 2024 and November 2025, according to a Reuters Institute report that cited Chartbeat data. Publishers say the drop is linked to AI‑generated answers that let users consume information without visiting the original sites, hurting both traffic and revenue.
SPUR is creating industry‑wide standards and technical tools, such as the Content Telemetry Standard, to help publishers track and control how AI agents use their content and to enable licensing agreements. These steps show that the news industry is actively defending its work while adapting to new AI technologies.
