Vietnam is introducing stricter rules for imported meat, a move that will affect many products on supermarket shelves. Understanding these changes helps shoppers see how the government works to keep food safe.
An official from the Department of Livestock Production and Animal Health said Vietnam will step up controls on imported meat because of worries about quality, origin and the risk of near‑expiry products being sold cheaply. These concerns focus on preventing low‑price, possibly unsafe meat from reaching consumers.
Imported meat must come from establishments that are registered and approved by the competent authorities of the exporting country. Those establishments are required to use quality‑management systems such as HACCP, ISO 22000, IFS or BRC. Every shipment also needs an export veterinary health certificate and, on arrival, it undergoes document checks, visual inspection and sample testing.
Border animal quarantine authorities have already found shipments that did not meet the requirements, and they imposed administrative penalties according to regulations. In response, the Department of Livestock Production and Animal Health will review and amend quarantine and import‑control regulations as well as risk‑assessment procedures. The department also plans to improve the professional knowledge of quarantine officers and expand laboratory testing capacity.
The new measures show Vietnam’s commitment to safeguard animal health and food safety while ensuring imported meat does not gain an unfair advantage over domestic products. Consumers can expect tighter oversight of meat imports in the near future.
