Electronic identification (eID) accounts have been introduced for foreigners living in Vietnam, and they can simplify many routine activities. This article explains why the new system matters for you and your family.
According to Article 7.2 of Decree 320/2026/ND-CP, foreigners who are legally residing in Vietnam may obtain eID accounts. The same rule also lets both spouses and children under 14 apply, but minors need parental consent through the VNeID app. This means whole families can benefit from the same digital identity.
eID accounts let holders access public services, credit, telecommunications, transport and e‑commerce platforms electronically. By using the VNeID app, users can reduce paperwork and speed up procedures that previously required visits to offices. The system also connects to national databases for reliable identity verification.
From 28 Sept 2026, eID holders will be able to pass through automated immigration gates when entering or leaving Vietnam. The gates are available to foreigners whose information is fully collected and updated in the National Immigration Database, or to those who already hold an eID account. This will make border crossings faster and more convenient.
To apply, go to the provincial Immigration Division, bring your passport and allow the staff to record your facial image and fingerprints, then download the VNeID app. The request is processed in two to five working days and there is no fee.
In short, eID accounts give foreign residents a single digital key for many daily tasks, and the application process is quick, free and family‑friendly. Once you have an eID, everyday life in Vietnam becomes noticeably smoother.
