Ho Chi Minh City has announced an ambitious plan to remove 28 traffic bottlenecks by 2030. The move could reshape how residents travel, work and shop in the rapidly growing metropolis.
Department director Tran Quang Lam said the city will focus first on the My Thuy and An Phu interchanges, National Highway 13 and the Nguyen Khoai bridge‑road project. These works are scheduled to finish before the 2030 deadline.
City officials warn that today’s congestion “continues to hamper residents' daily lives, economic development, and the overall investment climate.” With the population expected to rise from 14 million to 25 million, easing traffic is seen as essential for future livability.
Department of Finance deputy director Truong Tan Vu confirmed that about VND500 trillion (US$19.29 billion) will be spent on transport from 2026‑2030, including VND200 trillion for 98 projects that target the 28 hotspots. At the same time, the metro system is planned to reach 255 km by 2030, laying the groundwork for a longer‑term, city‑wide rail network.
If the bottlenecks are cleared, commuters can expect shorter travel times and smoother journeys, which should raise productivity and attract more investment. In short, the traffic‑relief programme aims to turn today’s gridlock into a more livable, economically vibrant Ho Chi Minh City.
