The Thai government is consulting on a new departure tax that would charge every air passenger 1,000 baht when leaving the country, with a legal ceiling of 5,000 baht per flight. Understanding this fee is essential for anyone planning a trip to Thailand.
According to the proposal, the 1,000‑baht departure tax applies to all passengers, Thai and foreign alike, and the law allows the charge to rise as high as 5,000 baht for a single departure. The tax is part of a broader package that also includes an international passenger service charge of 1,120 baht, which has been collected at Airports of Thailand since June 2026.
The Thai Hotels Association estimates that, when the service charge and a newly suggested 450‑baht foreign tourist fee are added, a foreign visitor could face total taxes and charges of 2,570 baht per trip. For a family of four, the combined amount could reach 10,280 baht, a sum that many travellers will notice in their budget.
The association warned that these added costs could dampen demand for air travel and make Thailand less attractive than other Southeast Asian destinations. It also noted that the financial burden might affect hotels, airlines, tour operators, restaurants and retailers across the tourism supply chain.
Thailand received 23.4 million foreign tourists between January and October, a 3.88 % year‑on‑year decline, and tourist spending fell 2.26 %. The decline suggests that higher costs could be contributing to a softer market, reinforcing the association’s concerns.
If the taxes are implemented, travellers should expect their overall expenses to rise noticeably, which could influence the decision to visit Thailand, especially when competing countries offer cheaper entry conditions. Keeping an eye on the final legislation will help you decide whether the destination remains affordable for your plans.
