SpaceX is spending about US$8 billion in cash to buy spectrum in the 800‑megahertz band. The purchase is seen as the missing piece that could let the company offer nationwide mobile phone service in the United States.
The 800‑MHz licenses have traditionally been used for wireless services transmitted from terrestrial cellphone towers, not from satellites. By acquiring these licences, SpaceX gains access to a frequency that is already proven for reliable ground‑based mobile networks.
SpaceX says the new spectrum will let Starlink combine satellite‑to‑phone connections with a terrestrial network. This hybrid approach could provide more seamless coverage, especially in places where satellite signals struggle, such as indoor locations.
The move could push Starlink deeper into the mobile communications market, putting it in direct competition with major U.S. carriers such as AT&T and Verizon. The FCC has approved Starlink Mobile’s application to launch 15,000 satellites in the 2‑gigahertz band that can connect directly with mobile phones.
If the deal is approved, everyday users may see better phone service that works both outdoors and indoors, thanks to the blend of satellite and ground networks. Greater competition could also give consumers more choices and potentially lower prices.
