Weighing Overseas Study Against a Home: Lessons for Vietnamese Parents
Học nước ngoài hay mua nhà: Bài học cho phụ huynh Việt

Parents in Vietnam often debate whether to spend VND2‑3 billion ($77‑115 k) on sending a child abroad for education or on buying a house for them. Understanding the trade‑offs can help families make a more informed decision.
A house is a tangible, tradable asset, while the value of a good education is harder to quantify and may not produce visible results within a few years. This makes the choice less straightforward for families.
The author, a single mother of two, decided to fund her eldest daughter’s study abroad in the Netherlands even though it meant a heavy financial strain and she could not predict the daughter’s future earnings. She believed the opportunity was worth the risk despite the uncertainty.
Owning a home does not automatically provide professional skills, foreign‑language proficiency, experience or adaptability; a young person may still struggle despite property ownership. Property can give security, but it does not guarantee a successful career.
Heavy investment in education can create an “emotional debt,” where children feel obliged to succeed and earn high incomes to justify the money spent on them. This pressure may push them toward unwanted paths or make them fear failure.
When planning a child’s future, parents need to weigh the concrete security of a house against the potential long‑term benefits and emotional costs of overseas education. A balanced view helps avoid regret and supports the child’s own aspirations.
