Ten years after UNESCO added the Mother Goddess practices to its Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016, Vietnam’s ancient worship is still alive. Its mix of old rituals and new media makes it a compelling story for young readers.
Music and social media are now major channels for the tradition, reaching audiences far beyond the temples and shrines where it began. Online videos and songs let younger people discover the rituals without travelling to a sacred site.
Popular productions such as the song “Co Doi Thuong Ngan” performed by Kieu Anh and Hoang Thuy Linh’s music video “Tu Phu” have placed Mother Goddess imagery in mainstream culture. These works spark fresh conversations about the heritage among fans of pop music.
Digital platforms let anyone search for images and videos of Mother Goddess ceremonies, giving young people easy access. Yet the same speed can strip the rituals of their cultural context.
Custodians of the worship warn that creative reinterpretation must not lead to theatricalisation or commercialisation that distorts the tradition’s core values. They stress that innovation should stay grounded in respect for the original meanings.
The Mother Goddess tradition shows how a centuries‑old belief can adapt to digital culture, but its keepers remind us that preserving authenticity is essential. Balancing modern appeal with respect for heritage will decide its future.
