A massive, high‑tech effort has recovered 731 fallen soldiers from Le Thi Rieng Park, and a nationwide tribute has brought the community together. The story shows how modern science and public participation can give families closure after decades of war.
From June 23 to October 5, Team K74 and other forces retrieved 731 sets of martyrs’ remains from Le Thi Rieng Park. Of these, 307 were found with personal effects, 698 were recovered individually and 33 came from eight mass graves.
Biological and DNA samples taken from relatives of the unidentified soldiers are being analysed and stored in the national gene bank, according to Cuong. This genetic work supports the ongoing identification of each fallen fighter.
The 500‑day campaign aims to speed up the search, recovery and identification of remains and will soon expand to other historic battle sites. Prime Minister Le Minh Hung attended the memorial and reburial ceremony, underscoring the high‑level government commitment.
Vietnam’s combination of advanced DNA technology, coordinated field searches, and community remembrance is helping to honour those who died long ago. The effort demonstrates how a nation can use science and solidarity to heal historic wounds.
