According to the Statistics Office under the Ministry of Finance, total registered foreign direct investment in Vietnam reached $50.36 billion in the first nine months of 2026, up 76.4 percent year‑on‑year. This surge creates fresh opportunities for Vietnamese businesses.
The massive inflow means more capital is available for factories, real estate, electricity and consumer‑goods projects. However, to turn money into lasting growth, Vietnam must improve technology transfer and raise localisation ratios.
Economist Nguyen Tri Hieu noted that about 30 years ago localisation ratios were only around 5‑10 percent, while today some industries have reached 52 percent. The rise shows that the country is moving from a low‑cost labour model toward higher value production.
Nguyen Tri Hieu also said Vietnam needs capital, technology and management expertise from FDI and aims to lift localisation to 60‑90 percent, following China’s experience. Higher localisation would reduce dependence on foreign firms and keep more value inside the economy.
Jackson Woo, director of SGS Vietnam, stressed that FDI firms can help build stronger domestic supply chains, but Vietnamese SMEs must meet international quality standards to join global networks. He added that trust and compliance are essential for becoming Tier‑1 or Tier‑2 suppliers. Cha Ji Ho of Samsung Vietnam explained that Samsung has supported local suppliers through consultancy, training and its Smart Factory model, standardising 96 companies by 2026.
In short, Vietnamese firms can profit from the record FDI inflow by boosting localisation, adopting foreign technology and joining international supply chains. Doing so will turn foreign money into sustainable domestic growth.
