Prime Minister Wong told Forbes that Singapore is actively turning the current AI boom into a chance to raise skill levels and improve employment quality. Understanding how a small nation manages this transition offers useful lessons for other economies and for individual career planning.
Wong explained that AI‑driven demand is fuelling rapid growth in the island’s semiconductor sector and is also spilling over into logistics and professional services. This surge has helped Singapore’s economy expand by about 5 % per year over the last three years, with AI‑related orders playing a notable part. The influx of investment from firms such as GlobalFoundries and Micron underscores the sector’s momentum.
The government’s strategy is to seize the present window of external demand, build new capabilities and create better jobs for Singaporeans. Rather than trying to preserve specific positions, Wong said the aim is to protect every worker as the nature of work changes. This reflects a broader belief that some jobs will disappear while many will need new skills. The plan relies on close cooperation among the government, employers and unions to help workers acquire the needed skills.
Singapore is also testing emerging technologies such as self‑driving vehicles, while assessing safety requirements for wider deployment. These trials help the country stay ahead in the AI race.
Wong called for international cooperation to develop safeguards for powerful AI systems, suggesting that the United Nations could eventually provide oversight tailored to different risks. The key takeaway is that Singapore intends to use the AI boom not only to boost its economy, but also to equip its workforce with future‑ready capabilities.
