Singapore's economy grew faster than expected in the third quarter, with GDP rising 5.4% year‑on‑year. The result beat the 5% forecast from Reuters and the 5.1% consensus from Bloomberg, making the data worth a closer look.
Manufacturing output jumped 7.5% compared with the same period last year, while construction activity surged 8.8% YoY. The services sector also kept pace, expanding 5.2% over the year.
OCBC chief economist Selena Ling said the strong performance was largely powered by AI and electronics‑related activities, together with robust trade and transport services. She added that construction and infrastructure projects also contributed significantly to the growth.
Following the data, several analysts raised their full‑year outlooks. HSBC’s senior ASEAN economist Yun Liu said the bank lifted its forecast to 5.8% from 5.1%, and Oxford Economics’ senior economist Sheana Yue expects growth to be close to 6%. At the same time, the Monetary Authority of Singapore left monetary policy unchanged after two consecutive tightening rounds.
In short, Singapore's Q3 growth outpaced forecasts because key sectors—especially manufacturing, construction and AI‑driven industries—performed strongly. The unchanged monetary stance suggests policymakers are comfortable with the current momentum, while analysts anticipate continued, though possibly slower, expansion.
