The new earnings ranking shows which college majors and schools give the highest pay early in a career. It helps students think about their future jobs.
According to the HEA Group analysis, Duke University mathematics graduates earned the most. Their median annual salary was $297,029, the highest among 24,526 bachelor’s degree programs.
The same analysis shows that computer‑related majors fill most of the top ten spots. Every program in the top ten earned more than $200,000 a year. Carnegie Mellon’s computer‑science graduates earned $268,121 and its engineering graduates earned $250,168.
Earnings were measured four years after graduation using federal tax‑return data for students who received federal aid and graduated in 2017‑18 or 2018‑19. Duke’s number is based on only 17 graduates, while Carnegie Mellon’s top programs each had more than 100 graduates.
Across all schools and majors, the overall median salary was $64,500, according to the analysis. Big gaps exist between the same major at different schools. For example, Carnegie Mellon computer‑science graduates earned about $150,000 more than those from the University of Alabama.
