A Van Gogh masterpiece is about to be auctioned in New York on November 18, and the sale is drawing attention from collectors worldwide. Understanding why this auction matters helps reveal the health of the high‑end art market.
The report says hundreds queued in Hong Kong to view Van Gogh’s “Châtaigniers en fleurs,” a painting that has not been publicly exhibited for over 60 years, before it heads to a Sotheby’s auction in New York. The preview gives collectors a rare chance to see the work in person.
The painting was created in May 1890, during Van Gogh’s final Auvers‑sur‑Oise period, making it one of the few works from his last days. Sotheby’s modern and contemporary art director Scott Niichel said the work is poised to set a new auction record for a Van Gogh piece. The November 18 auction is expected to fetch about $180 million.
The auction preview says the November 18 auction will test the strength of the high‑end art market, showing that collectors still compete for scarce trophy works despite broader economic uncertainty. This competition highlights the market’s resilience even when other luxury sectors are shaky.
According to the painting’s provenance record, after Van Gogh’s death the work passed to his brother Theo, then to Theo’s widow Johanna van Gogh‑Bonger and their son Vincent Willem. Later owners included German publisher Samuel Fischer, American songwriter Buddy DeSylva, collector Harriet Harris‑Jonas, and finally the Blaquier family, who bought it from Wildenstein in 1975.
If the work reaches the predicted price, it will confirm that rare masterpieces can still drive strong demand in a volatile economy. The auction therefore serves as a barometer for collector confidence in the luxury art market.
