Da Nang City in central Vietnam is being urged to control the number of visitors at ecologically sensitive and heritage sites, including Son Tra Peninsula, Cham Island, Hoi An and My Son. The aim is to protect nature and culture while still attracting tourists.
Vu Quang Dung, deputy head of the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, urged Da Nang to control visitor numbers at those sites. He said green tourism is no longer optional but essential for competitiveness, and the city must not sacrifice environmental quality for growth.
A 2026 Booking.com survey found 85% of travelers consider sustainable tourism important. An Agoda survey showed 35% of respondents want more eco‑friendly tours.
Vietnamese destinations have piloted green initiatives, such as Hoi An’s circular tourism model that aims to cut plastic waste by 60% and Co To Island’s effort that reduced plastic waste by 75%. These examples illustrate how local actions can lower environmental impact.
Vu Quang Dung also urged Da Nang to establish carrying‑capacity indicators for sensitive areas like Son Tra Peninsula and Cham Island, as well as heritage sites such as Hoi An and My Son. He recommended expanding community‑based ecotourism and studying green‑credit policies that would offer interest rates 1.5‑2 percentage points below standard rates.
