The Asian Football Confederation is weighing a shift of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup because of security worries in Saudi Arabia. If the tournament is delayed, Vietnam’s plans for qualifying for the World Cup and the Asian Cup could be seriously affected, making the story important for fans and players alike.

AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa said the tournament could be moved to 2028 if security conditions in Saudi Arabia deteriorate. He added that the AFC could wait until the end of November before deciding whether to postpone the event.

The Asian Cup is set for January 7 to February 5, 2027, and will be hosted in Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar. A shift to 2028 would force the AFC to redesign its competition calendar, which would directly complicate Vietnam’s already busy international programme.

The AFC is preparing a new competition structure that links future World Cup and Asian Cup qualification, including a trial of the AFC Nations League in the 2028‑29 season before its official launch in 2030. If the Asian Cup moves to early 2028, the AFC will have to rethink the whole calendar, and emerging nations such as Vietnam could be significantly affected.

Under the proposed plan, Vietnam would need to monitor results across AFC and FIFA competitions to stay in the top tier, the only group that can compete for direct World Cup qualification spots. This adds another layer of pressure on the Vietnamese team to perform consistently in multiple tournaments.

Security concerns stem from attacks at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh that killed at least 14 people, injured more than 300 and disrupted air travel. The same security alerts have already delayed a club match and forced the rescheduling of other sporting events, highlighting why the Asian Cup’s location is under review.
