An American tourist was arrested in Japan after staying longer than his visa allowed. His case shows why it is important to follow visa rules.
He entered Japan through Saga Airport in October last year. Police found that his permitted period of stay expired in January this year. He went to Izumi Police Station in Kagoshima Prefecture on Oct. 10 and was arrested for violating the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act.
He said he was unemployed, had no fixed address, no money, and did not want to return to the United States. Police are investigating his activities during the months he stayed in Japan.
The case reminds travelers that staying after a visa ends can lead to arrest and legal trouble. Always check visa dates and leave on time.
