After The Weeknd concert at Rajamangala Stadium on Oct 12, two Russian tourists took a tuk‑tuk in Bangkok. The story shows how tuk‑tuk prices are set and why a driver can be fined for asking too much.
The driver asked the tourists to pay 4,000 baht for a ride that lasted about 15 minutes and covered roughly 15 km. The tourists only gave 400 baht, saying the price was too high, even after the driver lowered his ask to 2,000 baht.
Police at Hua Mak station later fined the driver under the Motor Vehicle Act. He was fined for charging more than the regulated fare and for not showing a public vehicle licence when officers asked. The driver admitted he had asked for 4,000 baht.
In Thailand, tuk‑tuks do not have distance meters. A 15‑km trip usually costs 250‑500 baht after negotiation, although drivers often first quote 600‑1,000 baht. Asking for 4,000 baht is far above the legal limit.
The case reminds travelers that tuk‑tuk fares are not fixed by a meter but are limited by law. Drivers who charge far more than the regulated price can be fined.
