Malaysia posted a 5.3% increase in gross domestic product (GDP) for the July‑September quarter. The result is interesting because it shows how emerging technology sectors can influence a country’s economic performance.
According to the statistics department, every sector grew in the quarter except mining and quarrying, which fell 4.9% year‑on‑year. The services sector rose 5.4%, while manufacturing expanded 7.5% thanks to export‑oriented industries. These gains helped lift overall GDP.
Construction activity increased by 6% in the same period. The department said the rise was supported in part by growing data‑center development projects.
Malaysia is recognised as a regional data‑center hub and is the third‑richest Southeast Asian nation by nominal GDP per capita, after Singapore and Brunei. The article notes that Malaysia has benefited from a global boom in artificial‑intelligence infrastructure, which has driven demand for its technology products and semiconductors. This demand aligns with the expansion of data‑center projects.
The central bank has kept its main policy rate unchanged at 2.75% since May last year. The rate has remained unchanged since May 2023.
Overall, the combination of strong manufacturing, construction linked to data‑center projects, and rising AI‑related demand for tech products and semiconductors coincided with Malaysia’s robust Q3 growth. The figures illustrate how technology‑focused investment can support broader economic expansion.
