According to migration ecologist Andrew Farnsworth, this is the first documented case of barn owls nesting in Manhattan in modern history. The family has chosen a water tower on West 75th Street, making the event a city‑wide curiosity.
Photographers and casual onlookers have gathered on the street each night to catch a glimpse of the owls. The excitement mirrors earlier NYC bird phenomena such as Flaco the Eurasian eagle‑owl and Pale Male the red‑tailed hawk, which also captured public attention. The nightly gatherings show how a single nest can become a city spectacle.
Barn owl sightings are very rare in New York City, according to the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. The city lies at the northern fringe of the species’ range, and the state Department of Environmental Conservation says the population has declined at an alarming rate. This rarity makes the Manhattan nest especially noteworthy.
Residents such as Elisabeth Williams heard periodic screeching noises from early September for weeks before they realized the sounds were barn owl calls. A phone app later confirmed the source, turning the mysterious night sounds into a public curiosity.
Manhattan birder David Barrett has documented at least two adult barn owls and several fledglings nesting on the water tower. He reported seeing five fledglings and believes there may be as many as six. The birds have also been observed carrying rodents back to the tower.
The unexpected barn‑owl family shows that even a densely built city can host surprising wildlife. It reminds New Yorkers that urban nature can appear in the most unlikely places, turning ordinary streets into a place for wonder.
